Pet Scoop’s HISTORY

In 1994, when Sam Johnson told his parents he was starting a professional dog waste removal service, their reaction was simple: “You’re going to do what?”

At the time, Sam had just graduated from the Colorado School of Mines with a Civil Engineering degree and had enrolled in the MBA program at the University of Colorado Denver. A few months earlier he had briefly worked part time for a small pooper scooper company before taking a full time construction job.

After several months of twelve hour construction days, the project ended and Sam decided he wanted to try something different. While finishing his MBA, he started a small business based on an idea most people had never heard of at the time: a service that cleaned up dog waste for homeowners.

He named the company Pet Scoop Services, choosing something a little more refined than putting the word “poop” in the company name. The bigger challenge, however, was convincing people that this unusual service was something they actually needed.

After an entire year of marketing, the business had just 15 clients and was barely covering gas and expenses.

Fortunately, Sam’s wife Lanier believed in the idea even when it did not look very promising. She encouraged him to keep going and helped with marketing whenever she could, even while working evenings at the front desk of a local hotel.

By the end of the second year the company had grown to 45 clients, and for the first time Sam could see the potential in this small niche industry. At the time there were fewer than 10 pooper scooper companies in the entire country.

In 1997, Sam graduated from CU Denver with his MBA and quite possibly became the world’s most educated pooper scooper.

Around that same time, Sam and Lanier welcomed their first child. With a new baby at home and a growing business, Sam expanded Pet Scoop across the Denver metro area. By the fourth year he was personally cleaning nearly 200 yards every week, driving about 400 miles, and scooping dog poop from dawn until dark.

Eventually he realized the company could not grow any further without help. After placing a help wanted ad and interviewing candidates at his kitchen table, he hired his first employee. Unfortunately, the employee never showed up for work.

Thankfully, the second candidate turned out to be the perfect fit. She was a stay at home mom with a law degree and a love for dogs who was looking to reenter the workforce. She became an essential part of the company and went on to serve as Pet Scoop’s Office Manager for 23 years before retiring.

What began as a one person operation has grown into one of the largest dog waste removal companies in the country. Today Pet Scoop employs nearly 100 team members and serves thousands of homes and communities across Colorado.

While we are proud of that growth, our goal has never been simply to become the largest company in the industry. Our mission is to be the best at pet waste management while also building a world class customer service company that truly takes care of our clients, their pets, each other and the communities we serve.

And even today, when people hear about the business for the first time, the reaction is often the same:

“You do what?”
